IIRC, Jon Pertwee's first line as the Doctor in Doctor Who was "Shoes!"
I have now seen from several different sources offering dating advice that women generally check out a man's shoes when assessing whether or not she's interested in him. This was something that had never even occurred to me, although if you're assessing a person's status in the world at large it's actually quite a good technique, even today (Sherlock Holmes made several deductions on the basis of shoes, IIRC, often involving the economic circumstances of people he encountered).
My footwear selections to date have been avowedly functional. A pair of trainers, which are for walking around, running when I have to, and generally comfy wearing. A pair of hiking boots for, well, hiking. A pair of wellies for hiking on wet days, or for grip in icy/snowy conditions. A pair of smart shoes for wearing to interviews, but which have high ankles and are awkward for casual occasions.
With the exception of the smart shoes, none of them are what you'd call for looking at. And the smart shoes aren't for going out.
So, what I needed was a pair of trainers that look good and kind of smart, while also being comfy and good for general walking/jogging/running when I have to.
I managed to work out a way to budget for a new pair of shoes this week, which meant that I could actually try to fill that brief. Looking for shoes to go out in - to pick up women in - is a new thing for me, something different from my usual considerations.
What I came up with is a pair of black leather trainers. The right shoe fits perfectly, but my left foot is slightly broader and longer, which means that the left shoe is a little narrow than I would like. Fortunately, leather tends to stretch so with a bit of wearing in they should be excellent in terms of the comfort part of the brief.
Here they are:
And this is what they look like on my feet.
Reckon I'll get the polish out to deal with that scuff they already picked up, but apart from that, I think I'm happy with the looks, too.
But what do you think dear reader? Have I found my new pulling shoes?
